Your baby’s first haircut can be a nervous time for parent and child alike, but with the right preparation, you can turn a snippy situation into a beautiful moment for you both. While you might be emotional letting go of those luscious locks, your child will be more scared by lots of new sounds, sights and sensations. Don’t let this put you off taking them for that first trim, all it takes is a bit of prep...

What to expect from a children's haircut?

Being wrapped in a cape, soaked with water and attacked with scissors sounds like a recipe for a tantrum. While the hairdresser will have experience keeping your little one calm, you can help prevent any hair-raising experiences by following our nifty tips and tricks.

  • Make it about them Book an appointment in between mealtime and naptime. You don’t want a cranky customer on your hands! If your child is having one of those crazy days, then don’t worry about rescheduling, it will be better in the long run.

  • Pick the right salon Picking the right place doesn’t always mean going to the kids salon. While there are some great ones out there, with plenty of videos and books to entertain tots (and a few of the adults), you don’t want to overstimulate them. If your baby is a particularly squirmy child, you may want to consider a normal mid-end salon.

  • Distraction means sanity Distraction and bribery; the age-old tricks for dealing with troublesome toddlers. A small toy or a familiar video on your phone will help them stay calm and keep their hands busy. And make sure there’s a little treat for them at the end.

  • Imperfection is okay Don’t expect a perfect haircut. Go into the salon with one overall goal for the cut; if your main concern is hair in the eyes, let the stylist know so she can prioritise. Little ones tend to get fussy, so you may have to stop before getting the perfect cut.
